The conventional method is that the individual cells are changed, but the whole array is updated to reflect the changes. What WBT is trying to achieve is that there is no update of the array and only the cells that require updating or changing are updated, This is where the speed increase and lower power consumption comes into play. It is similar to the standard PC which is a Page Mode system as opposed to a RTOS (Realtime Operating System) where only what is required to be changed and updated is carried out and not the whole page updated. That is my take on it.
