In Australia, when a company buys back its own shares, it generally has 28 days to cancel them. This requirement is set out in section 254Y of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), which states that a company must cancel shares as soon as practicable after they are bought back and no later than 28 days after the buyback.
There may have been an administrative oversight here...?
