For example, CF33 can be engineered to express enzymes that degrade the dense extracellular matrix, helping it penetrate thicker human tumor stroma. Similar modifications have been successfully applied to other oncolytic viruses to enhance tissue penetration and spread and with combination therapy like immune checkpoint inhibitors or other immunomodulatory agents can mitigate the rapid immune clearance observed in humans
