I've done a fair bit of work and looked back.
The problem with 87 it was one massive hit which we havent seen since. Therefore, your averages will look good if guessed right or bad if guesed wrong.
I hear your point re stops etc.
Without filters, I seem to be getting some 60% win loss ratio with higher ave wins than ave losses. But as good as this seems, there are spells when it simply looks ugly!
Anyway, I do it more as a hobby than a living. If I had the time and sat in front of the pc all day, who knows, I could ride out the ugly times without too much pain.

FYI I find Yahoo provide good historical info especially for US indicies and also I found US indicies easier to predict. I think this is driven by the fact that they don't care what happens elsewhere but all other indicies are heavily affected by the US.
