Sometimes I feel that way myself.
My personal opinion is this:
A few years ago, the government had a huge inquiry into Super funds. Their main aim was to launch a systematic attack against Industry funds because the poor retails funds usually ran and managed by the big 4 banks and their lackies, were underperforming seriously while industry funds were making lots of money for their members. As a result, new regulations came out, all industry funds had to have an ‘independent’ board member on their boards who is probably going to be from a hedge fund, or bank etc.. You can see where this is going yeah?
Now, given every single Super fund is totally scared of being put onto a list of underperforming funds, that to prevent that from happening, they are going through large hedge funds who are fricken notorious for shorting just about every single stock.
So, it didn’t take the funds much to realise that they are making more money by loaning out shares for shorting, and reaping the rewards from that, rather than go long on many individual stocks. They do have some, but mostly they now short.
Even our government has allowed the ‘Future Fund’ (paid for by taxpayers), to utilise hedge funds for profit. So it seems everyone is now just shorting. That seems to be the new investment thesis.
While SMSF owners and individual mums and dads are going long, all the professionals are shorting mums and dads and SMSF owners of their money.
This is what I feel is now happening. I might be a little bit off, but it certainly smells like this to me. When you can smell dog shite, and it looks like dog shite, it usually is dog shite.
I believe a more important inquiry needs to be conducted to expose what’s actually going on in the ASX, with Super and Hedge funds.
