It was pretty damming of the Indonesian government & the Chinese owners of the mines. They also attacked the Australian Federal government for not doing enough to protect the Australian nickel sector. It showcased just how devastating the collapse of the nickel industry has been in Oz.
It should be an eye opener for EV owners, they might actually start asking questions about where & how the minerals inside the batteries are sourced & processed. If consumers start demanding action, then automakers may not have a choice but start sourcing battery minerals in a more environment friendly way. Perhaps the Australian government may introduce a "battery passport" similar to EU regulations so EV buyers can see just how environmentally friendly the battery inside their EV actually is.
I think changes are coming & the Indonesian nickel industry days might be numbered.
