"Trees, a lot of ground-water is used in WA and this has resulted in the gwater table being deeper and deeper over time and more salinity in the soil. I researched Lake Dumbleyung recently because there was a false lithium find, but it seems LD is now a salt lake but that it wasn't prior to industrialisation."
So perhaps the article my grandfather was reading was actually talking about the ground water issue, but not in those terms. I just asked him again about the article and he was saying that the weather was also changing with less rainfall down south compared to NW. He thinks it was a newspaper, but cannot be sure as he read alot of published papers. Who knows now??
So I tell you what I would love to find that article, prob only paper (or journal database) and would be ground fill now, unless it was a newspaper paper and it might be on micro film etc??
