Share market is NOT zero sum game. Every share is a piece of total assets that company owns. It does not have be hard asst, intellectual property will just as nicely but they must have something at least a promise of Blue Sky.
Now we often pay more than the NTA price because we know that the company puts the assets to work and derives income from them. Also it is hard to value an idea. How much could a good search engine be worth? How will they make it pay?
Current SP is collective estimate of company's worth and potential. And often it is being altered by factors that have nothing to do with company's business or country's prospects.
