They have two options, keep selling to try and hold the price(or drop it a little) to avoid margin calls etc. or buy back and take their punishment.
The increase in number of shorts are indicating that 4 trading days ago most were running option 1.
T+4 from yesterday may show the cracks that some have switched to option 2.
