like Australia was such a backwater, a Hawaiian (a black fella) named 'The Duke' was required to visit to introduce surfing, so at least Aussies had something they could be proud of
they could let go of their convict heritage, call themselves 'surfers' & enjoy the natural elements like the indigenous folks ('the black fellas') did
