Rio Tinto said it agreed to form a joint venture with Corporacion Nacional Del Cobre deChile to develop a lithium project in Chile's Salar de Maricunga resource base. The world's second-biggest miner by market value said Monday that it will invest up to$900 million, consisting of initial funding and further development subject to certainmilestones and studies. The joint venture aims to deliver first lithium by the end of2030. Under the agreement, Rio Tinto will acquire a 49.99% interest in the Salar de Maricungabase, through which Codelco holds its licenses and mining concessions in the region. "Developing this significant lithium resource will deliver further value-adding growthin our portfolio of critical minerals essential for the energy transition," Rio TintoChief Executive Jakob Stausholm said. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
