Citi said last week that with prices of spodumene dropping below $US700 a tonne, Western Australia’s Greenbushes mine – a joint venture that is 49 per cent-owned by US-listed Albemarle, and 51 per cent by ASX-listed IGO and China’s Tianqi – is the only Australian asset generating cash at spot prices.
Concerns about slowing lithium demand have also intensified after electric vehicle giant BYD last week announced that it would cut prices on 22 EV and plug-in hybrid models in China by as much as 34 per cent until the end of June.
The move came after the company last month posted its slowest year-on-year growth in vehicle deliveries in more than four years.
