Need to do MORE with LESS

*** University of Michigan: The amount of copper needed to build EVs is ‘impossible for mining companies to produce’

    Projections indicate that
future copper demand will exceed the total amount mined historically. This is due to a combination of factors, including a growing global economy, the energy transition (requiring copper for renewable energy and electric vehicles), and population growth.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts global copper demand will surge significantly, potentially requiring twentyfold more copper by 2040. This surge is driven by the need for copper in renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and other emerging technologies.

Existing mines and those under construction are projected to meet only a portion of the anticipated demand, creating a potential supply gap.

Industry experts estimate that a substantial number of new large copper mines (perhaps 80 mines the size of Los Bronces) LINK .... will be needed to meet the projected demand by 2040.

Declining grades of ore in existing mines mean that more ore needs to be mined and processed to extract the same amount of copper, increasing costs and potentially impacting the supply chain.

While copper recycling is crucial for sustainability, it is unlikely to fully offset the increased demand for primary mined copper.
