Given Australia's birth rate, I would not consider it out of the realm of possibility for IVF procedures to become increasingly subject to rebate. There is a current $2K rebate in NSW, but what are the chances this gets increased or introduced in other states? Current IVF cycle costs about 10K. Little argument to be had to subsidise 50% of IVF costs, especially with reduced NDIS in the figure of $14 Billion for 2024. It would be a relatively small cost to subsidise IVF given its long-term benefits in productivity through reproductivity, especially compared to NDIS. In which of these does a dollar go further? 100% IVF rebate would probably lead to long term abuse of the service, but short term 100% rebate (say, for 6 to 12 months) would stimulate the sector and overall birth rate while keeping the IVF industry active in Australia. In effect, dissuading medical tourism for IVF treatment to SE Asia.
