    Thanks afternoon crew.

    End-of-day summary:

Australian shares closed at a 16-week high following overnight gains in gold, oil and US stocks.

The ASX 200 rallied 53 points or 0.63% to its highest close since February 18 - around the time when rumbles about changes to US trade policy first started to unsettle financial markets.

Gold miners and energy producers outperformed after Ukraine's surprise weekend attack on Russian airfields fuelled a flight to havens and dashed any near-term hope of sanctions on Russian crude being lifted. Viva Energy, Westgold and Genesis Minerals were amongst the day's best.

US stocks overcame early weakness last night after the White House said Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping would speak this week to try to revive stalled trade talks. The S&P 500 firmed 0.41%.
