mjmj, you nailed it so I don't have much to add.
Speccies are by definition high risk - greed and incompetence can get in the way of good judgement...
However, people can manage that speccie risks by conducting research including taking the time to read company announcements. Regading the latter, the announcements were either poorly constructed/worded, or a deliberate obfuscastion of the true status (take your pick). Either way, their obscure nature deprieved people of the opportunity to properly understand the risk, and their opportunity to make informed decisions - either to buy or continue to hold.
Jeez, who wouldn't buy/hold if a director publically stated their confidence in getting the oppies over the line (a 2 to 3-fold increase in sp)?
I for one held through this period when I would otherwise have sold. Such statements, clearly without foundation, were unforgivable.
