I posted this over on a PLS thread a while back

There is another use for the worlds lightest, most reactive metal. Apparently an Isotope of Lithium is required for Fusion reactors. It's not just a matter of confining Hydrogen at high temp and pressure and collecting the excess energy, large amounts of Li-6 are needed to help sustain the reaction and its not that easy to separate it out from the majority Li-7 isotope in an environmentally friendly way. The world isn't expected to have a power producing fusion reactor for a decade or so but the Germans are already funding a project to enrich Lithium from 7.5% to a 50% to 90% concentration of Li-6 so they have a stockpile ready to go.

Fusion power may never happen if we don't fix the lithium bottleneck
