Btw, I didn't want to mention as I thought it's not possible;
if those datacentres want to have a 24 hours backup duration, which is not much, they need to have 3,219GWh BESS system combined.
The LCE amount in the 3,219GWh BESS would be 2,736kt.
If we consider the total LCE supply of the world today which is 1,500kt (1.5mt), that wouldn't be possible.
But we have to built those large scale BESS at the end of the day anyway. So the world needs more and more lithium.
The extreme weather events linked to climate change are a growing issue.
We know that power outages from storms, floods, and other extreme weather events linked to climate change are a growing issue.
The aging grid infrastructure in many regions isn’t built for these new extremes, and reliance on centralized power systems makes recovery slow. Solutions exist but face hurdles. Hardening grids—burying lines, upgrading transformers—costs billions.
When it comes to data centres, they can face significant risks from extreme weather events driven by climate change; hurricanes, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires can disrupt operations, damage equipment, and cause costly downtime.
SOLUTION: Microgrids and decentralized power systems, plus larger BESS..!
Microgrids and decentralized power systems reduce outage impacts by localizing energy production and distribution, making them less dependent on centralized grids that can fail during storms, floods, or other climate-driven events. Decentralized systems spread out the risk. If one microgrid fails, others can still function, unlike a centralized grid where a single failure (like a substation flooding) can black out entire regions. For instance, California’s wildfire-driven outages have pushed adoption of community microgrids to keep power flowing locally.
Microgrids are small-scale power systems that can operate independently or alongside the main grid. They use local sources like solar panels, wind turbines, or small gas generators. If a storm downs transmission lines, a microgrid can "island" itself, supplying power to critical facilities like hospitals, schools, or homes without relying on distant infrastructure.
However those systems need large BESS backup systems when weather disrupts them for days too.
