Its interesting seeing these larger and large-flat rocks in the drilling picture above relating to heap leach drilling (the last area drilled before better coffee was available again). These rocks indicate that the design of the heap leach may have been less than ideal (meaning a greater chance of poor leach recoveries so lots of gold is left there for TG6 to recover via toll milling).

The design of the heap leach involves applying (spraying?) dilute cyanide solution to the top of the heap leach and recovering that cyanide from the bottom (inclusive of some gold that has been dissolved creating a pregnant solution). This loop occurs for weeks, if not months. One of the ways it can go wrong is if the cyanide channels down to the bottom of the heap. If cyanide were to channel, then some areas of the heap leach get lots of exposure to cyanide but other areas get almost none (or none) and recovery rates fall away due to no recoveries from some areas. Among the better, if not the best way of avoiding this problem is care around crush sizes.

If you were silly enough to have large rocks and in particular large flat rocks each rock could act like an umbrella and create a little protective shield for the area of gold bearing ore below the rock. If unlucky, multiple flat rocks could act like a tile roof and protect a larger area than a single rock would. The solution of course is to have an ore crushed into smaller pieces. This is why picture is particularly interest is you shouldn't be seeing larger rocks in a well designed heap leach. Why are they in the photo?
