They're backed by the West because the current guy hates Iran. I guess that'll change if/when Iran falls. He even let Israeli jets fly over Syria to attack Iran.
Muslims also hate other Muslims.
The Middle East is one screwed up place. With Muslim sects/factions and militant groups fighting each other, then in the middle of that we have a Jewish nation who is either hated or merely tolerated by them all!
