It wouldn't be the craziest idea the Australian DoD ever had. Those little buggers are virtually indestructible.

I've spent the last quarter of a century doing engineering in the Defence industry, and I've seen some crackers and quackers.

"Let's buy a nuclear powered sub, but retrofit it with a diesel engine. And get the French to make it happen!" What could possibly go wrong???

The 'shiny object syndrome' was the worst. Some bright spark with a bit of brass sees something they like on an overseas jolly, and next thing it's a directed procurement and the requirements engineers are expected to reverse engineer a use case to introduce it in to service. Then spend $$$ and hours training the men in green pyjamas to use it, only to have it relegated to the back shelf of a dusty warehouse when the next latest and greatest system replaces it.
