I think "only the most inept people", as you put it, would interpret a statement "that the move to address the problem accelerates much more steeply from here" to mean that "2030 targets would be met even earlier". The chances of meeting 2030 targets are not great, speaking generally, but those targets are only the beginning.
2030 should and could have been well into the mid game of course correction. But 2030 will stilll be more like just the beginnings of that midgame of progress .
I'm hopeful that progess accelerates to avert the worst. Because the worst is far worse than we have seen to date.
And I am also hopeful that those who are most at fault for delays to date and the willful manipulation of public understanding are hit the hardest by the ongoing impacts and the extent of damages that are now unavoidable. That would only be equitable. I'd have no sympathy to see them hit the worst.
