I lurk because I have no desire to upset or offend anybody or their beliefs but I seem to without intension.
In this case it was the simple statement you made, case closed, Kam, that lured me from my place of lurking. I envy your certainty because I have no capacity to be certain of much at all, especially the meaning of scripture.
Anyway, my reading of John and the Advocate more or less lines up with your thinking except Jesus says He will send another Advocate. If referring to the Holy Spirit the word, another would not have been used because there is only one Holy Spirit. Another, is suggestive of the return of a Jesus like being who will represent God in the spirit of Jesus. This makes sense at least to me because so many of the prophecies regarding what the Messiah will achieve have not come to pass even in the slightest, so somebody has to return.
Did Abraham receive the Holy Spirit so as to represent God on earth - as did Noah, Moses, Jesus, I think you would answer yes. Was Isaiah, David, the Disciples, the church assisted by the Holy spirit and guided by the Holy Spirit, once again I'm confident that you would answer yes.
When Jesus returns, assuming you believe he will return, will He again represent God on earth via the Holy Spirit? There's a good chance you answered yes.
Will the returning Jesus say exactly the same things He did the first time, which of cause wont help us much in this age, or will He address humanity with a new set of challenges and a new set of remedies related directly to this age, an age so vastly different to Jesus' time.
If Jesus returns and gives us a renewed spiritual education which to me seems essential, addressing specifically this very new and very different age, will He produce a new Bible, or add to the Bible, Bible just meaning books, so will Jesus add to the BOOKS, will He still call Himself Jesus or will He take a new honorific title relative to this age and prophecy?
Will He start a new religion, remembering that Jesus said you can't put old wine in a new wineskin, or sew new cloth to old cloth, meaning new teachings can't be infused back into old teachings.
You say no other is needed for the salvation of souls, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, okay, but surely God and Jesus would further assist humanity and help us adapt to these vastly changed times of science, globalisation, the clash of religions, isms, races, cultures, sexes, this is like no other time in human history. Would it not require a new response for this age, not one that has drifted through the filter of 2000 years plus of religious debate not unlike what takes place here on HC?
I just can't see how the case can be closed.
Anyway, thank you for responding, all the best.
