BSL bought out Butler distribution that included plants in China. They have downsteam capacity in SE Asia. You don't need a front end if you can buy HRC cheaper from China than you can produce it yourself and convert it into value added product that can be sold at a cheaper price into other markets, including Australia. O'Malley stated that Port Kembla was the worst performing business in BSL. So in the interests of shareholders it is his responsibility to stop the bleeding. Add to that $400M for a potential carbon tax, potentially an increasing $A.........well the conclusion would be obvious. I'm not saying they will do it overtly but as conditions change they must consider all options to reduce overheads. I suspect any well run company has a number of options they must consider. I'm not taking a position in this but it just adds to the discussion of where things could head in the future.
