K2 Energy?s solar testing yields successful result
Published 2:26 PM, 4 Mar 2011
K2 Energy Ltd says it has received a very successful report from the initial testing of the Mears Technologies solar cells and plans to accelerate its research and development program to ensure commercialisation can commence later this year.
The company is running two separate solar cell fabrication process, one in the US and the other in Japan. The result of the U.S.-fabricated solar cells showed a substantial improvement in optical power generation per unit thickness of silicon for the MST-PV enabled solar cells compared to crystalline and polycrystalline silicon solar cell controls fabricated under the same process conditions, K2 said.
The MST technology involves the production of an altered layer of silicon that can be used in the manufacturing of silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. This layer is introduced to increase the efficiency parameter for PV technology and solar power generation in silicon PV cells.
The company said that while more work is needed to prove-out the manufacturability of the ultra-thin cells, the results show that the technology could be used to create more efficient, ultra-thin solar cells than currently available.
Last year, K2 acquired the exclusive rights to the MST IP for all solar applications from Mears Technologies.
