We've had wars and mass killings etc for thousands of years, since the global population was a tiny fraction of what it is today - yet the planet supports a much higher population now. Still I agree its a mistake to think our expansion can go on infinitely.

From the point of view of our species survival, probably not. But how do we choose who to sacrifice for our benefit? Or perhaps for the benefit of someone else's descendants, who don't share our altruistic ideals, and have as many children as they can conceive.
