yes its back on the table.
when legislated in 2011 it was attacked as a vicious evil foisted on Australians that would cost us all enormously and was totally unnecessary. the attacks were led by Tony Abbott and was part of his sour grapes revenge for not winning the 2010 election (imo).
buit there was no validity in his allegations. the Carbon Price was levied and brought a small windfall to the budget over its 2 year period of operation.
more importantly the effect was shown in a 10% fall in Aus emissions over those 2 years. it was therefore successful and a means to encourage businesses to reduce GHG emissions from operations. businesses across the land were installing renewable energy and battery storage, and beginning to turn to electric vehicles. M0re importantly miners were investing in machinery that was better suited to confined mining conditions and so improving the air that underground miners breathe.
our national emissions increased after the Abolition of the Carbon Price and continues to rise. Currently the Safeguard Mechanism built into the Renewable Energy Target scheme has failed to induce businesses broadly to reduce emissions.
This article written by Felicity Deane, Prof in Trade, Law and Taxation in The Conversation gives a full account of the current situation.
given the planet is facing drastic changes to our global climate, we are compelled to reduce carbon and other GreenHouse Gas emissions. we need a motive for businesses to reduce emissions - having said that, we must recognise that many companies have voluntarily made significant efforts to reduce emissions - and we need it asap.
this is a hot topic. I hope we can keep the discussion civil please.
