I thought this was a good piece from one of the major news sources.
African rare earths will be shipped to a taxpayer-backed refinery in Western Australia, under a deal struck between the plant’s builder, Iluka Resources, and ASX-listed Lindian Resources that supports government efforts to loosen China’s grip on critical minerals supply.Iluka would also lend $US20 million ($30.8 million) to Lindian to help pay for the construction of the Kangankunde mine in the landlocked, East African nation of Malawi.Iluka chief Tom O’Leary predicts higher prices for rare earths mined and processed outside of China. The preliminary deal, which remains subject to due diligence by Iluka, would bolster the Albanese government’s plan to grow Australia’s minerals processing industry because it would require Lindian to ship a rare earths concentrate across the Indian Ocean to the refinery Iluka is building at Eneabba in WA.Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King said she was pleased to see more rare earths were bound for processing in Australia.“Securing supply chains for rare earths and critical minerals is a global issue and is at the heart of the government’s Future Made in Australia agenda. The more rare earths and critical minerals processed in Australia, the better,” she said.Related QuotesILUIluka Resources$5.790 0.17%1 year1 dayAug 24Nov 24Feb 25Aug 253.0004.0005.0006.0007.000Updated: Aug 6, 2025 – 11.54pm. That loan has since been increased to $1.65 billion to cover cost blowouts on the Eneabba project, which is expected to start production in 2027.
