WORRYING SIGNS IN METALS: If "Doctor Copper" is the "metal with the degree in economics", you'd have to say its prognosis for the global economy is deteriorating quickly. Copper neared a three-month low last night and from a technical perspective looks like it has to hold around this level or it could fall a lot lower. Other industrial metals may not look as shaky but copper tends to lead the pack. Much of the weakness can be attributed to the effect of the oil spike on the outlook for the world economy, but there is additional pressure from rising inflation, increasing stockpiles at the London Metal Exchange and reports of weak demand from China as the Chinese government cools the economy.
