Despite the lousy sell job from the Prime Minister and Govt, I think I get it, even if they don't at present.

Pricing carbon gently at first and ramping up relentlessly with annual increases shifts market forces in favour of energy sources that are carbon free or low carbon ... by the time te price of carbon gets to a certain level it will no longer be viable to produce electricity from aging dirty coal fired power stations ... perhaps 30 yrs from now it wont be viable to do so from what today is regarded as a clean coal technology.

The really critical issues are 1) actally introducing a carbon tax to start the process 2) pricing in the annual increases that encourage innovation and change without stalling the economy or hampering Australia's competitiveness and 3) having governance (as distinct from goverments) that ensure the collected carbon tax is reinvested wisely for all Australians in innovative energy industries and energy efficiency initiatives.

My real concern is that governments wont excel at governance and will treat the massive incoming carbon tax funds as a honey pot to use as they see fit for all sorts of inappropriate, irrelevant and wasteful schemes and policies.
