Sept 9 2025:
UnitedHealthcare (UHC) has updated its Glaucoma Surgical Treatment policy to cover goniotomy, trabeculotomy, canaloplasty (ab interno), and combined canaloplasty and trabeculotomy procedures for adults, when deemed medically necessary for treating mild to moderate open angle glaucoma, and cataract in adults currently being treated ocular hypotensive medication.
This coverage policy, effective 1 October 2025, applies to UHC's commercial and individual exchange benefit plans. UHC is one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States with over 50 million total covered lives.
This is incredibly exciting news, it seems clear now that there has been a complete u-turn, with insurers now recognising the incredible value of interventional glaucoma management via MIGS, and are now looking to INCREASE coverage, rather than take it away.
