It is a fact that the development timetable and capital cost for LNG powered electricity plants is the lowest of all fuel sources ie. compared to nuclear, hydro, coal, and perhaps oil. However, the operating costs rank almost in the opposite order. Therefore, Japan's response to closure of nuclear power plants is most likely to be to rapidly construct as much new LNG fuelled power as can be achieved to try to return the country to normal as soon as possible.

Over time as any substitute base load power can be brought on stream then the LNG powered plants may revert to peak load as that is what they are generally used for. In the event nuclear power becomes unacceptably risky as is being mooted by the German administration as an example, then in a carbon constrained world, gas could become the obvious substitute despite the high operating costs.

I consider it a positive for a full development of Crux (rather than a gas recycling development) but perhaps more importantly for the LNG industry in general.
