If you read the history of the Popes you will find that for the whole history after Constantine there was a constant struggle between the church and the state to control the church. Keeping them apart has been a constant conflict. Mostly it has worked.

Look at the orthodox churches and Islam to see organisations that have not been as successful as the Catholic church at keeping state and church apart.
