Surgery is not always straightforward. Difficulties and complications will statistically occur. That is a fact.
Better to stay in there and do the job properly than bail out when things get difficult. It's called responsibility.
You'll note that some coronary artery bypass grafting operations last that long too- especially if the chest has previously been opened as everything is stuck down and it takes ages to cut through it all.
To also be noted is that any operation involves a learning curve for the surgeon and times invariably shorten.
Also where is the data that operation time correlates with mortality? Is this really such a big issue anyway?
