I think many people find the ex-dividend date confusing. Maybe because of what's been written in 1960's text books about books closing dates, record dates and how company announcements mostly don't refer to the ex-dividend date but a record date.
Try holding a large written put option position and seeing whether you have or have not been exercised for the dividend. Tends to focus your understanding of dividend entitlements.
