Lucerne is good mulch but not high in nitrogen, bit of a myth.
I would be looking at cheaper alternatives as in pasture hay with little or no weeds! Sugar cane mulch has quantity
but lacks in nutrients.
Mulch builds up soil, conserves moisture and protects top soil from excessive heat
