rio's beyer says higher uranium prices needed , page-2

    This is very interesting.

Efectively Rio is saying that buying uranium product makes more sense than going for an acquisition. This suggests it is going to stay focussed on pushing for a joint development with Extract, CGNPC, Epangelo whomever rather than spending cash on an aquisition it could use instead to expand and upgrade its Rossing plant.
An overlooked point is that were a joint venture development with Extract be agreed for Hsab involving trucking or conveyor-belting ore to Rossing, the plant there is over 30 years old and cannot operate at more than 4,500 tonnes per year final product U3O8. Including Rossing's own output, clearly to accomdate substantial extra feed from Husab would require either upgrading the existing Rossing tank leach plant, expanding it etc.

One thing Rio may have in mind is that AREVA paid over the odds for UraMin in 2007 to get hold of the much lower-grade Trekkopje deposit and has since found development of a mining operation- full capacity production from which has been delayed to early 2013- much more complex and expensive than envisaged. Admittedly this is mainly because Trekkopje ore needs heap leaching to be treatable while this will not apply to Husab's higher-grade ore which is treatable by convetional acid leaching.
