usually they try to buy back unmarketable shares - then all it does is act as a temp support under the share price - so it keeps it stable but if it rises to much some companies stop buying
The best gains are made for rangebound traders who can take small but predictable profits on this type of movement from on market share buybacks. It also helps volumes as for those wanting large day trader returns (it doesnt work in this case)
