Table 4.3 shows the quantity of natural gas required to replace 1000 MW and 3500 MW
of coal capacity. 1000 MW of capacity is equal to around 9% of total scheduled and
semi scheduled generation capacity in Victoria. By way of comparison, Victoria?s
largest coal generators have winter capacity of 2270 MW (Loy Yang A) and 1600
(Hazelwood). Victoria currently produces about 358 PJ of gas. Therefore the closure of
one large power station in Victoria is likely to require an increase of gas production by
15 ? 30% if it is replaced by gas-fired generation plant
