The fact that they got C5 (heavy tail of the gas detected by mudloggers) almost certainly indicates oil. If the gas breakdown did not include C5 then we could be looking at wet gas/very light or gas.
"Background gas" is a continous measurment of gas that is always recorded whilst drilling. This term is used on all wells. It is not surprising that to people with no oil jargon knowledge a lot of technical terminology may sound negative. Believe me, this time it looks very promising!!!
