Great idea, BB, sort of like they did in the UK, eh? Trouble is, shooting deaths went up by over 400% after they did that, and now every teenage thug there has a Glock pistol.....
Ban guns in Australia, but all you would be affecting would be licensed owners, who do no wrong with them....and the bikies, the crims, the Asian gangs would still have them....and will always have them... Your wish will come true, to a degree, starting soon.... Soon as Bob Brown gets control of the Senate in July, he is going to try to ban automatic handguns, for starters....and before you get excited, he'll take lots more off us....like standard of living, etc. But the only ones he can ban are the ones on record through licensing, held by responsible people......the baddies will still have theirs....is that what you guys want? For only the goodies not to have firearms? And what will happen is that good, law-abiding people will become crims...if they dont surrender their firearms. Ban motor cars instead....they kill more people.
"Then our streets will be much safer." Nope, all the crims & druggies will still have their guns.....they'll just be braver knowing we havent got any. Look at your US statistics...nearly all gun related crime happens where not many citizens "carry", such as New York, till recently. In counties where EVERYBODY (and his dog) carries, there is virtually zero crime. See, crims dont like to have someone shoot back.... Why dont you do something good like banning hunting with bows & crossbows?
