THE ONGOING saga within the Ministry of Mines and Energy continues with the suspension of the Director of Mines this week.
The Government issued the suspension notice on the Director of Mines, Peter Auga this week.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Benjamin Newyear confirmed that the director was given his suspension notice as effective on Tuesday.
Mr. Newyear however said he is not in a position to give details on the grounds for the suspension of the Director.
Island Sun however was told by reliable sources that the suspension might be related to the Government?s investigation into the validity of the prospecting licence to Australian Mining Company, Axiom KB to conduct Mineral exploration on Bugotu, Isabel province.
This is despite the International Tender board?s decision to award Sumitomo Company of Japan the license to carry out nickel prospecting in the same area.
The prime minister's office has disputed the validity of the license, saying the circumstances surrounding its issue "are highly suspicious."
The government has launched an investigation, saying it wants to identify the true customary landowners.
The former Minister of Mines and Energy, Mark Kemakeza was also removed from his portfolio for his role in issuing the licence to Axiom KB.
The Opposition group has condemned the Government for disrespecting the International Tender board?s decision to award Sumitomo Company of Japan the license to carry out nickel prospecting on San Jorge Island in Isabel Province.
