Salt erosion may not be that much of an issue if the metal is treated for it. Most coal minnig equipment can suffer a similar fate due to the sulphur content present. Light vehicles (4WD's) suffer this fate because they are a mass produced product with no specialist work done to prevent this. Other than that I've seen 380 tonne haul trucks aged 15 years old going around with no issue from rust etc. Considering the service life of a well used haul truck is about 8 years then that's not too bad an effort. Being in the middle of the desert at least means they wont need to worry about noise complaints and dust surpression, and if its not slated to begin till 2016 then they have plenty of time to compare equipment required relatie to the ground conditions and order from there.
