News Corporation (ASX:NWS) has moved closer to full control of British broadcaster BSkyB. The UK government has accepted plans to spin off Sky News. Sky News is set to become an independent, publicly listed company and News Corporation is not allowed to control more than 50 per cent of voting shares.

Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate launched its bid for full control of BSkyB in 2010, triggering fierce opposition and competition concerns. The British culture secretary had been concerned that Mr Murdoch’s grip on news production in the UK could harm the diversity of voices in journalism.

In the first half of its 2011 financial year, News Corp posted a net profit of just under $1.5 billion.
