Interesting article in the West Australian today. Talking about BHP still wanting to be big in potash but they let it slip that its ambitions are not just limited to Jansen. It said it had 16 mill tonnes production earmarked by 2015 (Jansen would produce 8 mill)and had stepped up its potash exploration in Ethiopia's Danakil depression.
Two major points I take from that, firstly it shows that BHP is still serious about potash and confirming that Danakil has the right potash. Leads to the second point, Ethiopia is landlocked, needs to get to port and the quickest is via Eritrea and for those who keep harping on about infrastructure, if the big boys want the deposit and that whole area would be tier one then infrastruture and cost is not an issue, BHP and RIO are throwing off $20bn a year. Article on page 68 West re BHP.
