All I heard from Monckton was talk of averages - an average increase of 1 degree for the planet. IMO that showed a lack of understanding of the very point you have made.
Variations in temperature extremes are also very important - as in a heat wave lasting for longer than ever before & / or exceeding a previous all time high.
