NEW Minister for Mining Byron Chan says recognition and protection of traditional landowners rights to mineral ownership on or under traditional land and sea-bed is among four major policy issues the Neill-Namah government will focus on, reports The National.
In his first address to divisional heads of the Mining Department and the Mineral Resources Authority last Thursday, Chan said traditional landownership claims of all hard-rock minerals and petroleum (oil and gas) had never been debated since independence.
