It's interesting to read the Technical Report prepared by Devmin & lodged on www.sedar.com in March,2004.
On page 3 of the report(being pg 16 of 104) in Fig #1 it gives the copper grade % expected to be mined each quarter.We can put dates on these periods as follows:
Quarter #1 Sep/Dec03: 7%
Quarter #2 Jan/Mar04: 8%
Quarter #3 Apr/Jun04: 8%
Quarter #4 Jul/Sep04: 6%
Now we haven't mined any ore from Oct04/Mar05 so:
Quarter #5 Apr/Jun05: 4%
Quarter #6 Jul/Sep05: 5.5%
Quarter #7 Oct/Dec05: 7%
Quarter #8 Jan/Mar06: 7%
Quarter #9 Apr/Jun06: 7%
Quarter #10 Jul/Sep06: 7%
Quarter #11 Oct/Dec06: 6%
Quarter #12 Jan/Mar07: 6%
Quarter #13 Apr/Jun07: 8.5%
Quarter #14 Jul/Sep07: 7.5%
And then we go underground where the grades are 10-14%.
So it's obviously no surprise to BT that we've encountered this low grade portion of the orebody at this time.
