How can you impose a law here where one must eventually speak English? What would we do if they refuse, send them back? Maybe it would be better if they can speak English to start with, but if they're escaping danger then no official here is going to enforce that rule on someone who's viewed as having a very traumatic background.

Anyway, slightly off topic. This tragic news has once again polarised this nation, and has dominated various discussions and news headlines. I'm very grateful that we are lucky enough to value the safety of our citizens - life here in Australia is held with very high regard, unlike war torn nations where life is cheap. That family would have not received the same recognition in Somalia as they have received here. If anything, I doubt it if the police would have bothered to turn up at all such is the way things are over there. It's not uncommon for people on the street to walk past dying individuals without battering an eyelid.

I'm pretty sure many of them find this kind of attention enlightening compared to what they become accustomed to in their home land.
