Niban said "Do aircraft pilots and engineers get paid peanuts in Singapore, Hong Kong, Europe ? (the answer is no by the way)"
Well Niban are Qantas pilots and engineers paid peanuts? The answer is no - rather they are paid very well and amongst the highest in the industry.
No one begrudges the pilots and engineers a pay rise - not even Qantas management. But the union industrial campaign has little to do with pay rises.
The current industrial campaign is moronic. The unions have drawn a line in the sand that Qantas will never accept. One of the outcomes of this moronic campaign is Qantas has to move to protect its underlying business. That means Qantas will shift more jobs elsewhere out of reach of the irrational unions:
= more outsourcing
= more offshoring
= more Jetstar
The moronic union campaign is costing its members jobs. 1000 jobs went this week. How many more Australian jobs does the union want to go?
Even if the unions were to win its campaign, which they wont, Qantas would become increasingly uncompetitive and it will be forced to slash and burn even more which equals more Australian job losses at an even faster pace for those very same union members.
If the unions and their members were really serious about saving Australian jobs then how about doing something a little more innovative - like negotiating to take a reduced pay increase in return for a reduction in the 1000 job losses that were just announced? Or how about trading some efficiency improvements for a reduction in the 1000 job losses?
There are many great staff at Qantas. It is just a shame they are being led up the garden path with what will ultimately prove to be a very unsuccessful and very damaging industrial campaign.
